Once in a while there is always a new telephone scam that tends to pop up, the most recent one has made BT stand up and state some warnings to the general public. The scammers fundamentally call the potential victims and state to them that they are working from British Telecom, they then state to them that their account has gone into arrears and ask for bank inside information to settle the account, before they get cut off.
People are a lot cleverer these days and would not fall for such a conjuration as they ask for identification. But what the scammers then do or say is that we will cut off your phone, the victim then shuts the phone and the scammer keeps his end of the line open so it seems as though the phone is not working. A person who has experience the scam first hand states "The cutting off of the line is very uncomplicated , he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out, but he can hear you trying (this is because the person who initiates a call is the one to dismiss it). "When you stop trying, he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced."
These scams should never be fallen for and there are a few tips which BT have said that you should forever do. A BT representative should always give you an employee number and never refuse to do so. They should also give you an 0800 free phone number to call them back on.
There is still a vast quantity of people that fall for this trick, merely because they are in all likelihood very kind hearted and would never think that anyone would do anything like this to them.
